The 16 Personality Types and Their Type Animals
You may have heard of the terms INFJ, ESTJ, or INTP. These are just a few of the "sixteen personality types" originated by Carl Jung, the founder of Analytical Psychology. His work inspired the framework we now commonly refer to and know as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).
The sixteen personality types present a remarkable framework that grants us unique perspectives on how we perceive and interact with the world. Each type results from a blend of four cognitive functions, giving rise to distinct patterns that shape our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
The sixteen types are categorized into four pairs of preferences:
1. Extraversion (E) vs. Introversion (I):
This pair reflects how individuals gain energy. Extraverts draw energy from the external world of people and activities, while introverts recharge in quieter, solitary settings.
2. Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N):
This pair represents how individuals gather information. Sensors rely on tangible, concrete data from their senses, while intuitive types seek patterns, connections, and possibilities.
3. Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F):
This pair highlights how individuals make decisions. Thinkers prioritize logical analysis, while feelers prioritize personal values and emotions.
4. Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P):
This pair reflects how individuals approach the outside world. Judgers prefer structure, planning, and closure, while perceivers embrace flexibility and spontaneity.
